The City of Port Jervis’ Section 8 application list opened on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021 and will remain open until January 26th, 2021.

Individuals wishing to apply for Section 8 assistance should be aware of this week’s very narrow timeline and strict guidelines to do so. Applications will only be accepted if postmarked by January 26th, 2021. They must be mailed by regular U.S. mail through the post office. not faxed, dropped off, emailed, or delivered by any other mail service or option.

In order to be sure envelopes are postmarked by January 26, it is advised that they be postmarked directly by a postal clerk rather than placed in a mail slot. Envelopes left in boxes in Port Jervis are not postmarked in Port Jervis, nor on the same day.

An application was posted on the city’s website on January 18th and can also be picked up at the Port Jervis Housing Authority office, 39 Pennsylvania Ave., between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. through January 26th.

Income eligibility, age requirements, and other guidelines as established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) are listed on the eight-page application. PJCDA considers three waitlist preferences, which must be identified on the application if applicable. These are:

• Applicants with disabled family members between 18 and 61 and who are experiencing housing instability

• Applicants who live or work in the City of Port Jervis

• Victims of domestic violence.

Once applications arrive in their office, they will be placed in envelopes by postmark date and will be opened by date, reviewed each for household and income eligibility, checked for preferences to see what they are eligible for, and researched further with household information such as sex offenders, production of methamphetamines, past housing terminations, or criminal convictions.
